Orchid Bud

Orchid Database

This website displays orchid species from the database filtered using taxonomy terms from Tribe Subtribe and Genus. Species from the genus bulbophyllum, for example, may be viewed by visiting the following link: (note the automatically generated hierarchy of the URL) /dendrobieae/bulbophyllinae/bulbophyllum or by using the Menu. In the species 'cards' nothing is hard coded - all text, taxonomy terms and images are generated from the database. The functionality can be applied to all use cases for the orchid database to create both automated and curated collections of content. Anyone, with little training, can create catalogues of species, which would automatically be assigned and appear on the correct pages.

Orchids

Taxonomy Driven Website

Taxonomy terms of tribes, subtribes and genera are imported as text lists into the database, which automatically generates branching trees of URLs where the trunks are the tribes, the branches the subtribes, and the twigs the genera. The species are the outermost nodes of the tree and form 'leaves' which are assembled into collections on an individual twig, which represents a genus. This is a powerful function permitting the generation of potentially thousands of 'pages' automatically. A menu of these relations is also automatically generated for navigation by the visitor.

As new DNA evidence informs the restructuring of the phylogeny of the Orchidaceae, it is a simple task via the hierarchical drag and drop taxonomy to reorganise this representation of the Orchidaceae.
